28 February - Rare Disease Day at Santhi School – Spreading Awareness, Compassion, and Hope

February 28 - Rare Disease Day

Why This Day Is Special

This day is observed globally, often on the last day of February, to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to diagnosis, treatment, and support for individuals living with them. It aims to shed light on the challenges faced by patients and their families, including delayed diagnoses, lack of effective treatments, and social isolation. The day advocates for equitable healthcare access and greater research investment for rare conditions. It promotes solidarity and understanding for these often-overlooked patient populations.

History Behind the Day

Rare Disease Day was first launched by EURORDis (European Organisation for Rare Diseases) and its Council of National Alliances in 2008. It chose the rarest day of the year, February 29th (in leap years), and February 28th in common years. The campaign has since grown into a global movement, with thousands of events taking place worldwide. It aims to bring together patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and policymakers.

Did You Know?

A disease is generally considered "rare" if it affects a small percentage of the population (e.g., fewer than 1 in 2,000 people in Europe, or fewer than 200,000 people in the US). There are over 7,000 known rare diseases, and new ones are constantly being identified. Many rare diseases are genetic and can be life-threatening or chronically debilitating. Collaboration among researchers and pharmaceutical companies is essential for developing treatments.

How Can We Celebrate?

Learn about rare diseases and the challenges faced by affected individuals. Support organizations that fund rare disease research and provide patient support services. Advocate for better healthcare policies and increased investment in orphan drug development. Share stories and information to raise awareness and foster empathy.

Every life counts, every rare disease deserves attention and care; together, we can bring hope to millions.

Rare Disease Day at Santhi School – Spreading Awareness, Compassion, and Hope

Today, Santhi School is observing Rare Disease Day with a focus on spreading awareness, empathy, and support for individuals and families affected by rare diseases. The event begins with a special assembly where students of Santhi School present informative speeches, skits, and posters that shed light on the challenges faced by people living with rare conditions. The principal of Santhi School delivers an inspiring speech, encouraging students to practice compassion, learn about inclusive healthcare, and become advocates for those whose voices often go unheard.

To make the observance more meaningful, Santhi School organizes activities such as an awareness walk, group discussions on medical care and inclusion, and a creativity corner where students draw symbols and messages of hope. Teachers at Santhi School guide students through interactive sessions on genetic disorders, the importance of early diagnosis, and the need for accessible medical support. The event promotes values of unity, education, and social responsibility, reminding everyone at Santhi School that every life matters and awareness can make a big difference in someone’s journey.
